Where We’ve Come From

Summit’s story of transformation began nearly 50 years ago.

The Summit Bible Church, sponsored by the Grace Bible Church in Dunmore as a mission work, began services in the former Clarks Summit Baptist Church, 113 N. State Street on Sunday, October 2, 1966, with 53 present. The idea of starting a new church originated with a small group of believers from the Dunmore church who met for Bible study and prayer in a home. They felt the need in the Abington area for a Bible preaching, New Testament church because of this was an area being transformed by rapid growth due to an industrial boom in Lackawanna county in the 1960’s.

By October 2, 1967, Summit Bible Church was officially organized. In order to declare their biblical stand on baptism by immersion, and to accommodate the students and faculty of Baptist Bible Seminary, Johnson City, New York, who were moving into the area, it was voted to put the name Baptist in the church name. On February 8, 1968, this work became Summit Baptist Bible Church.

In the spring of 1978 Pastor William Broughton was called to be pastor. During the time that Pastor Broughton served, the need for a more spacious church building was concluded. Summit Baptist Bible Church purchased and moved into its current location at 232 Noble Road on June 1, 1980 in the very heart of the Abington Heights community.

Since that time, Summit Baptist Bible church has thrived as a church with rich history of godly pastoral leadership and a focused, gospel-centered education ministry. In 2010, our Lead Pastor, Don Roe, was called to serve along side of Frank Passetti who oversaw Youth and Outreach from 2000 – 2014. Pastor Frank stepped down in early 2014 to become a Youth For Christ Missionary. Then in January of 2015, Stephen Merkh was called on as the new Associate Pastor.

Which brings us to today. Summit is nothing like it used to be. Neither are you. The truth is, we are always changing. And that’s why the Gospel is good news. God sent Jesus to deliver us from the devastating consequences of sin, which is death. Because He died on the cross and rose again to life, we can be forgiven, and completely changed. That’s why we have a mission. We’ve been transformed by Jesus, and help others be changed by Him too.

It doesn’t matter where you are coming from, or how badly you have “turned out,” you are welcome here at Summit. That’s why we believe Summit is the perfect place for you and your family to join, to get involved, to grow, and to be transformed.
